Don’t Let Possible Health Problems Impact Housework
One thing to keep in mind as we get older is that we may chronologically age but we don’t have to accept that getting older means slowing down in any meaningful way. Baby Boomers (born between 1945 and 1964) are probably the largest group of people moving into the senior ranks these days, but they understand it’s important to keep the housework going even in the face of health problems.
And this phenomenon — in which they continue to accept that aging doesn’t mean slowing down — is actually a positive sign, for it is the person who gives in to minor aches and pains that begins to age the most. Even those who may need knee or hip replacements, or who just have leg arthritis — trying hard not to let such problems affect their ability to get around the house.
Of course, none of this means that we are soon going to be inundated with hordes of helpless Baby Boomers or cripples over the next few years. For one, there’s almost no Boomer with any self-respect who would ever admit that a minor ache or pain is going to stop him from doing anything. This is good, because just a little bit of exercise, some weight loss and pain relief can really help.
It is exceedingly easy to come to the conclusion that even a minor ache or pain is a reason to keep the housework to a minimum, even if that means we’re going to let go to waste a $600 Dyson upright vacuum cleaner that we just bought. However, keeping a close eye on preventing slowing down and also working with a physician for intelligent pain relief means we don’t really ever have to go completely slow.
That’s why it’s a good idea to refuse to look at any age as being the time to go and sit out on the porch and watch the world go by. What this really does is cause you to begin to ‘rust’ in a way. This is so, even when certain aches or pains might begin to convince one that it’s time to pack it in. That’s probably when it’s more important than ever to keep moving, to be honest.
Now, if the thought of going back to that vacuum cleaner isn’t priority number one, consider starting up the old garden once again. Go to the garage and get out the dusty and unused garden vacuums that once were a popular part of the backyard activities. Clint Eastwood, in the movie ‘Gran Torino, ‘ was 78 or 79 and very vigorous when he made the movie so that’s something to keep in mind.
The most important thing above all else is keeping a positive attitude and understanding that chronological age is nothing but a marker. It’s when we begin to believe that reaching a certain age means it’s time to pack it in and start rusting that we begin to get into trouble, health-wise. Keep up the good attitude and a solid outlook and one can fight the negative effects of aging.
